|Abstract:||This thesis discusses the improvement of surface morphology of SrTiO3 substrate and the epitaxial growth of BaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattice. The off-axis radio frequency magnetron sputtering system has been used to deposit the samples. The crystallinity of the samples was measured by X-ray diffraction. Besides that, the reciprocal space map was used to estimate the relaxation of superlattice and to detect the existence of domain structure of superlattice. The roughness and the surface morphology of the substrates was characterized by atomic force microscope. We found the heat treatment conditions to obtain the high quality SrTiO3 substrates and Nb-doped SrTiO3 substrates with single unit cell steps and minimal residual SrO. Then we studied the significant role of the electrostatic boundary condition in the growth of BaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattice. The superlattices on Nb-doped SrTiO3 substrate and SrTiO3 substrate with SrRuO3 as bottom electrode have better crystallinity then those on SrTiO3 substrate. Finally, we compare the X-ray diffraction scans between the superlattice on Nb-doped SrTiO3 substrate and the superlattice on SrTiO3 substrate with SrRuO3 as bottom electrode. The difference could be the different limited screening length the Nb-doped SrTiO3 substrate and SrRuO3 bottom electrode have.|
