dc.description.abstract Porous polymeric materials have been widely used in the area of environmental remediation. Two kinds of porous polymeric materials and their environmental applications are presented in this dissertation. 1. Nanofibrous Ultrafiltration (UF) Membrane. A novel thin film nanofibrous composite (TFNC) membrane barrier layer was prepared by integrating ultra-fine cellulose nanofibers (CN, 5 nm in diameter) with a cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) network. Preparation, characterization, filtration performance, and applications of this novel UF membrane are demonstrated. 2. Sponge-like Porous Polymeric Absorbent. Natural porous material - luffa sponge and synthetic porous material - polyurethane, both have high-porosity framework structures. Facile chemical modifications were carried out to adjust the surface hydrophilicity of the sponge fibers. The modified sponges could be used as high efficiency and cost-effective oil absorbents. The effect of sponge pore size and oil viscosity on the absorption capacity was investigated. en_US
